The end of Thursday
After the library, we found the Elk's Lodge. After sitting down, the barmaid
asked to see J's membership card. Had last year's but not this years. Duh. So we
went back to the RV and found it right where I knew it was...just hadn't gotten
it into his wallet. Back to the Elk's...only about a mile away and had a beer
(freebee - thanks!) and a quick bite to eat.
Friday
After several calls to various sources, could not get an answer to where the
Stifflers and Casebeers might be buried. Quick trip to Walmart next door and
back to the rig for lunch.
The decision
Freezing here...looked at weather in sw PA - 43 and snow flurries...for the
next several days. By golly, I think we're outta here and headin' south to the
warmth. The ancestors will still be here - hopefully can come back next fall
with a much earlier start! Am sure PA is gorgeous in Sept-Oct.
Where to go?
Friends near Greenville, SC have been asking us to come see them...and they
have lots of room for our rig...and it is 75 degrees and sunny there. What are
we waiting for? Packed up in a real hurry and were on the road by 2 PM. One fuel
stop...tried to use our BP rewards card - 20 gallons at 10 cents off. After
fueling and swiping the rewards card, it didn't take the money off. Darn...why?
Manager made a phone call because she didn't know....well, apparently they are
no longer a BP station, but no one told them or took down their sign, etc...
Will use it down the road. At least we got the diesel for $3.97 instead of the
$4.19 on some signs. WV must have high fuel taxes!
Another Elks
Made it to Charleston, WV on I-77. Found an Elk's Lodge in our directory. WOW
is VW hilly...we climbed up a huge hill to get to the lodge, and then another
steep hill to get up to it. Nice lodge and we backed into a grassy/gravel area
near their picnic shelter. Had our "freebee" beer (thank you) and partook (is
that a word?) of their dinner...salad bar and the best baked steak (swiss steak
with brown gravy) that I have ever eaten since Palmer College Cafe when I was a
youngster. Mashed potatoes, green beans and a yummy roll like they serve at
Golden Corral. Wow! Good to have a "real meal" after several days of mishmash
food.
Lucky
A gal came around selling 50-50 tickets so we thought we should buy 8 for $5
to help support the lodge...yippee $46 winners...never win anything, but this
was our lucky night, I guess. The Lodge members were probably the most friendly
we've encountered. One of the people who we chatted with had his daughter and
granddaughter with them to eat dinner. The child, probably about 8, drew the
winning ticket for us, so we gave her $2. Well, in return, here she comes to our
table with the business card and Elk's pin from her grandpa, a Grand Lecturing
Knight. They travel all over in their MH and we had a nice conversation about
travels. Small world!
Saturday
Up and attem! Have 2nd low tire on RV...a slow leak which is now getting
faster. Had to have another one repaired in Toledo. Took it off last night and
will take it in the truck to find repair first thing this am. Then hook up and
run further south! Mike and Stormy...here we come.
